Does a correlation between high temperature and ice cream consumption exist? How is this

Which is the country which eates more ice creams?

According to the well-known statistics provider “World Atlas”, New Zealand, the United States, and

Australia are the world's biggest consumers of ice-cream.



In particular, the rank is lead by New Zealand, with a per capita consumption of 28.4 liters per

year. This country is renowned for the high standard of its dairy products and its ice cream

producers adhere to a strict hygiene and quality regulation, taking also advantage from training

programs.

So trust and healthiness made ice cream of New Zealand so attractive to the eyes of its consumers.

U.S.A. is classified as second in this bizarre top ten with 20.8 liters of ice cream per capita consumed

annually; it is also the first ice cream manufacturer country in the world, due to and higher internal demand and thanks to a thriving export to Asia, the Caribbean, and Latin America.

The production of ice cream is focused from March to August, with a peak in the month of June.

In Australia, the consumption stands at over than 18.0 liters per capita annually. Ice cream market is

dominated by multinationals such as Streets, Cadbury, Peters, and Connoisseur.

Anyway, most of the sales derived from grocery stores and supermarkets, so Australians prefer

industrial products.

Nowadays has been an increased interest in fruit based ice cream varieties as people are seeking

more healthy options.

Ice cream consumption in Finland is estimated at 14.2 liters per capita annually. As Finland is a cold region, most of the ice cream sales take place only during the short summer. Most purchased ice cream are that commercialized by Nestlè (45% of share in the market) and Unilever – Ben & Jerry’s (21% of the total share). In 2022 it is estimated that ice cream market will overcome $89 billion.



Latest tendency is to chase low fat and organic ice cream trend. Ice cream manufacturers are in

turn seeking to maximize the nutritional benefits of the products they sell. New flavors and

varieties are constantly developing to not bore and astonish consumers. Furthermore ice cream

consumption is also growing up in China, Brazil, and India.


Is ice cream consumption affected by weather and seasons?

Nowadays ice cream consumption is growing up, especially in the emerging market of Asia and

South of America.

Anyway, ice cream demand is influenced even by other factors: temperature and seasons.

Indeed, according to the statistics it’s easy to understand how ice cream sales are correlated with

hot temperature and summer months.

Looking at Google trends, one of the best tools to analyze statistics and emerging trends, we can

see how the global web search for “ice cream” is a sinusoidal function which increases in

correspondence with the warmest annual period and slowly goes down close to the winter with

the lower value in December/January.



Otherwise, it is so interesting to compared the ice cream demand in country with different

weather/ temperature conditions. In the following example is reported the web search for “ice

cream” in three countries: Italy, in the boreal hemisphere, Australia in the southern hemisphere

and Indonesia, in the equatorial zone.



As you can see, while in Indonesia (yellow line) where the temperature is always the same, ice

cream demand is rather constant, in Australia (blue line) and Italy ( red line) the internal demand

is the contrary because in these country the seasons are inverted: this is the evidence that

temperature and seasons impact heavily on the ice cream request.
